Canastota, New York is an Erie Canal community central to a region rich in historical tradition. Originally settled in 1810, Canastota evolved into a vibrant Canal town and became incorporated in 1835. Many Victorian style homes from the active Canal period still exist throughout the Village. Products produced in Canastota, such as Canastota Cut Glass and Sherwood sleds and wagons, are highly valued in the antiques market. Canastota has a proud Italian heritage. Onions and potatoes from the local mucklands are recognized country wide. The Village has been prominent in the sport of boxing, producing two world champions. The International Boxing Hall of Fame is now a leading feature in the Village. Induction week is in June. This is an excellent week of fun for the family, boxing fan or not. The library is a Carnegie Library on the National Register of Historic Places. It is rich in architecture and full of excellent literary works.
