Washington County Senior Center

Washington County Senior Center
45 North Street
252-793-3816

History :

The Washington County Senior Center opened its doors on July 1, 1977. Gov. James Hunt attended the dedication ceremony. Before the Center had its own facility, Seniors met at the Housing Authority on Water Street in Plymouth. Mrs. Mary Mills was hired as nutrition site manager in 1974 and the Senior Director was Mrs. Lilly James. Food was prepared daily at the Center by Rosa Sutton. Later, the Albemarle Commission in Elizabeth City, NC had home meals prepared by a restaurant so that a Home Delivery service could begin. Ceramics and other crafts were among the first classes offered. Today, a variety of classes and other activities are offered regularly and meals are served on site as well as delivered to homes around the county.

The Washington County Senior Citizens' Center is a nonprofit organization funded by county. It operates under the guidance of an Advisory Board made up of nine County representatives. Gifts of time, money and other support are always welcomed.
