Western Springs Park District was formed in 1924.  Between 1931 and 1963, various parcels of land were purchased or deeded which now make up Spring Rock Park. Spring Rock Park received its name in June of 1934. This name recognized the existence of an artesian spring, which in the 1800’s created a 25 foot diameter pool on the tract. Spring Rock Park became Western Springs’ first recreational park and the only downtown park in a village along the Burlington Railroad with the exception of Riverside’s riverbank. Old articles suggest that much thought went into the planning and development of the park to bring about its great beauty and usefulness.

The Park District is an individual taxing entity and is independent of the Village government. The Park District maintains the parks in the Village while the Recreation Department runs the recreation programs under the direction of the Village Board.
