About Widener University:

Widener University is a private, metropolitan university that connects curricula to social issues through civic engagement. Dynamic teaching, active scholarship, personal attention, and experiential learning are key components of the Widener experience. Widener offers liberal arts and sciences and professional programs leading to associate's, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Widener offers the extensive degree programs and courses of a large university, but its small size means that you get personal attention, small classes, and a real sense of campus community. You'll enjoy state-of-the-art athletic and academic facilities, along with the opportunity to study with top-rated faculty who want to help you succeed.

You can join the many Widener students who become actively engaged in Chester and nearby Philadelphia, taking advantage of all the volunteer, internship, cultural, and just-for-fun opportunities that this metropolitan region presents.

By responding to the educational and societal needs of the surrounding region, students at Widener are inspired to become citizens of character who contribute to the vitality and well-being of the communities in which they live and work.

The History of Widener University:

In 1862, the Pennsylvania Military Academy (after being founded in 1821 as the Bullock School for boys in Wilmington, Delaware) moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania, where it was granted collegiate powers and privileges by the Pennsylvania legislature.

After spending two years in Upland, Pennsylvania, the Academy settled on what is now the Main Campus and became the Pennsylvania Military College (PMC) in 1892. Starting in 1946, when returning World War II veterans were admitted as non-cadets, PMC evolved from an exclusively all-male military college to a coeducational liberal arts college.

Now, with four campuses, including the Exton campus, which offers adult undergraduate evening and distance learning courses, Widener University offers 140 programs of study.

Today, with its legacy of preparing future leaders and fostering enlightened civic engagement behind it, Widener University's mission in the 21st century remains essentially the same: to inspire students to become citizens of character, as well as civic and professional leaders, who contribute to the vitality and well-being of the communities they serve.
