Wilshire Avenue Community Church

History

In the Spring of 1892, a group of people met to explore the possibility of organizing a Baptist church in the Fullerton area--then a rural farming community in a little thought of slice of Southern California. In spite of many obstacles, the young church was encouraged and blessed by many sources of outside support, including help from sister churches in the local area such as the Baptist congregation in Orange, whose pastor conducted the first worship services at FFBC.

In another windfall, the Presbyterians had vacated a building on the corner of Wilshire and Pomona, allowing this new group of Baptists to hold services in this house of worship.

Needless to say, the church has gone through many changes since the signing of the charter on January 15, 1893, evolving into the up-to-date campus we have today. In particular, the Building Up! campaign has brought us into the 21st century. In a word, the church is now "wired." We have updated the multi-purpose room which is used for such diverse activities as basketball, banquets, concerts and special events/worship services as well as updating our worship center--renewing its vitality by once more making it into a warm, inviting place, equipped with the latest audio/visual capabilities.

But most importantly the church's vitality is reflected in our ongoing commitment to use our facilities and our gifts to reaching out to the community at large with the life changing message of Jesus Christ.

Statement Of Faith

Theological Convictions

In essential beliefs we have unity.

In non-essential beliefs we have liberty.

In all our beliefs we show charity.

God

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He exists eternally in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one with God.

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make human beings aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer spiritual gifts when they are saved. As Christians, we seek to live under His control daily.

The Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living.

Human Beings

Human beings are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God, which is called sin. This attitude separates people from God and causes problems in many areas of life.
