Wylandville Elementary School is one of seven elementary schools in the Canon-McMillan School District. It is located on Route 519 South in North Strabane Township, one of the fastest-growing townships in Washington County. At the present we have a student population of approximately 190, for an average of 20 students per class in kindergarten through fourth grade. We offer a half day academic kindergarten program, with one morning and one afternoon session. Each classroom has access to five computers for daily use. Students in grades one through four use the computers at least forty minutes a week. Kindergarten students have five computers in their room, and are learning keyboarding and using the computer to reinforce language arts and math skills. The district offers an after-school homework help program in each elementary school starting in the second 9-week grading period. Wylandville also has tutoring opportunities during the school day. Students who are having trouble in a subject or understanding a specific concept may sign up to receive help as often as they feel it is necessary. Questions about the curriculum may be directed to the principal, Dr. Takach, or to any of our classroom teachers. Wylandville has a very active PFA (Parent-Faculty Association) that meets approximately eight or nine times a year. The PFA sponsors monthly programs for the students and plans other activities such as Earth Day and holiday parties. They also organize after-school classes in areas such as model-building, karate, art, wildlife from the Pittsburgh Zoo, and languages.

Beginning in forth grade, students may take part in band and chorus programs. The chorus practices weekly during school hours. Instrumental lessons are offered once a week in a regular band class to those students who are interested. Band and chorus have and annual concert in the spring. SCOPE (gifted) classes offering enrichment to those students who qualify are held once a week and taught by a separate SCOPE teacher. Students demonstrating high levels of achievement on standardized tests and curriculum-based assessments are recommended for the program. To qualify, students must meet Pennsylvania state guidelines. Questions about this program may be directed to Dr. Takach. Scouting activities are available through Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos, and Boy Scouts for girls from kindergarten through fourth grade and boys from first through fourth grade. Sports offered are baseball, softball, cheerleading, hockey, lacrosse, swimming, basketball, football, wrestling, and soccer for all age groups. Although these activities are not sponsored directly by the school, information is sent home with the students concerning registration and fees. Wylandville prides itself on past and present academic performance. Our staff strives to improve student achievement through differentiated instructions, diagnostic assessment, and the utilization of clinically proven instructional strategies.
