The Milwaukee County Historical Society was founded in 1935 to collect, preserve, and make available materials relating to the history of the Milwaukee community. Through a broad range of activities, the Historical Society seeks to promote a greater appreciation of the Milwaukee community's rich heritage and a better understanding of life today.

The Historical Society is housed in the Milwaukee County Historical Center in Pere Marquette Park on North Old World Third Street between Kilbourn Avenue and State Street.

This grand building was designed by the architectural firm of Kirchhoff and Rose. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was originally constructed in 1913 as the Second Ward Savings Bank. In 1965, the Milwaukee County Historical Society moved into the building and opened Its first exhibition the following year
