About Doug Doug doesn’t come from a long line of doctors; both of his parents were trained as accountants and his father was a residential general building contractor. And Doug didn’t start in family medicine – he began his career in the clinical laboratory at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine hospital. From this experience, Doug realized his true calling in life. “I determined that I wanted to take care of the whole patient, not just their bodily fluids and tissue, and so I applied – and the rest is history.” Doug has spent the majority of his life in the Michiana area. He even completed the Family Practice Residency at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, which played a large part in his decision to choose Beacon. “I am impressed with the depth and breadth of care that Beacon provides to our community and wanted to play a small part in that mission.” Doug received his bachelor of science in medical technology at Andrews University, then pursued his Doctor of Osteopathy from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. After his Family Practice Residency at Memorial, Doug began his nearly 30-year career with multiple family medicine positions, an emergency room role and a program director position for a medical residency program. As a family medicine doctor, Doug can affect change in the health and well-being of community members from all walks of life. “Family Medicine allows me to take care of a wide range of wonderful and interesting people in their pursuit of better health. I am honored to care for the youngest to the oldest members of our community, to be a caring and compassionate teacher along their journey.” Doug cherishes his career and the rewarding opportunities it creates. “I enjoy this specialty so much, I have never worked a day in my life – to paraphrase Mark Twain.” In his own words… What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? Framing houses with my dad and his business partner. It was rewarding work to be a part of making something that lasts. What is your favorite food? Movie? What were your best/worst subjects in school growing up? Italian food. I’m not much into movies. Best subject: science. Worst: math. If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Abraham Lincoln, because I would be interested in all of the history and intricacies of his life and times. In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? Camping, outdoor activities, and anything with an engine.
