Last year, the City of Pembroke Pines passed an ordinance that makes Juneteenth an official City holiday.  Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865 as the date enslaved individuals in Galveston, TX learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.  As part of the City of Pembroke Pines Code of Ordinances, Juneteenth is a day of celebration in the city and a paid city holiday. According to Juneteenth.com, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. For more information, please visit www.juneteenth.com.
